Day 10: Circles

I did this on the airplane. Return trip from Chicago OHare to LAX. ( I LOVE Virgin America Airline! Love that purple lighting in the cabin.  Love the employees' sense of humor. Love the individual TVs on the back of each seat.  Love the direct flights.  Love that the planes are new enough to have "Turn Off All Electronics" light right next to the "Fasten Seatbelts" light)

I got caught up watching "Forrest Gump" while on the plane, and one of my contacts had fallen out, so drawing was just not happening.  I don't feel like this one is completed - I will continue to work on it and repost the finished drawing.

Day 9: Treasure Chest

So I was in the Chicago area for 6 days, and that is why I am currently playing catch up with the blog posts.  I promise that I DID draw every day, but I just was not able to post.  This was done on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

I was staying with my sister, Kim, who is a PhD.  She asked me to come into her class at The Chicago School ( a Professional School of Psychology), and be a guest lecturer.  She was teaching a class on Conflict Resolution, and she wanted me to have her class learn/do some art interventions.  It was the last class of the semester, and I decided to have each of them share some treasure that they gained from the class and from each other.  It was a really nice way to create closure.

I am going to be coming on to The Chicago School as an adjunct professor in their "Blended Program".  That means that most of the classes are online, and we will only meet face to face twice.  I love teaching, and I am excited about a new endeavor in my life.  Plus, more trips to Chicago - not bad.

Day 8: Heart

This was playful, quick and expressive.  Limited interpretation from me is needed - pretty simple.

Day 7: Earth and Marz

I've been playing "Draw Something" on the iPhone. Got the word Earth, and I wanted to draw it again. Fun

I drew this while I was teaching an all day seminar in IL. I mentioned my iPad Drawing Challenge, and suggested that they check out the app "Paper".  My attendees where busy creating colleges.

I really like the layering effect of the watercolor.

Day 6: Home with Two Suns

Traveling across the country. Presenting seminars in Illinois is fun, but I know that home is always waiting for me. Throughout the years, I have often drawn/painted landscapes with either two moon or two suns.  Maybe my soul lived on another planet with two moons or in a different solar system with two suns. (Again I cannot upload picture yet, but you can see this image on my Facebook page Hayes Art Therapy - I will edit the image into this blog post at another day)

Day 5: Up In The Air

I am having trouble uploading this drawing, but you can view at Facebook - Hayes Art Therapy. When I get to a computer I will add it to my blog. I drew this while I was flying from Los Angeles to Chicago today. Sitting in the window seat, I spent a good ten minutes just drawing the sky. Could it be that I was influenced by what was just outside my window? Winkie face! Things I like about this app: the watercolor aspect and the layering affect that can be created. Things I dislike about this app: limited color choices and no color fill-in for large spaces. ( hoping those issues will be taken care of in the updated version).

Revitalize Yourself

"3 Minute Art Therapy" video podcast - Episode 007.

Are you feeling uninspired, depressed or bored?
Pamela shares a unique art project to wake up your senses.

Day 4: A Bird in the Hand

Last spring  birds built nests and had babies in the eaves of out back yard patio, and some of the babies fell or where pushed out of the nests.  Shoveling up dead baby birds is not my favorite thing.  Those same birds (or the next generation) keep trying to build nests in the same place, and Michael keeps knocking the nests down. Those are some persistent birds.

My cats, who sit at the back window, are thrilled to watch the entire scene.  Subconsciously, I must have been thinking about these goings on when I drew today's picture.

Day 3: Asian Abstract

This one has a very Asian art feeling to me. Its much more graphic with sharp lines and pointy edges, but this app made it easy. The white lines and dots where made by erasing back into the colors - which is so fun and clean.  I do wish this app had more color choices and a color fill-in option.

I noticed that the number 4 is a repeated theme in this drawing.  Maybe because there are four of us in my immediate family (me, hubby, and two daughters) - although I was not even consciously thinking of that while drawing.

Day 2: The Brain

Today I was creating a new Webinar (Art Therapy and OCD) and I needed a picture of a brain showing the basal ganglia to describe the process of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder from a neurological point of view. Although it would be convenient to grab an image off Google, that would be unethical (wouldn't it?). So, I decided to draw the brain image myself.

Killing two birds with one stone, I drew the brain on the iPad.

Pre Challenge - Calla Lilies

I drew these last week, so they do not really count as my "Challenge", but I wanted to share anyway.

The Calla Lily is my favorite flower! My wedding bouquet was made of Calla Lilies. They remind me of 18 years ago, when I lived in the Sunset District of San Francisco (Judah and 19th Ave). Every day I would go for a run through Golden Gate Park, and there are sections along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive where the Calla Lilies grow wild.

This is not a delicate flower - it is strong and hard core. Calla Lily is blatantly sexual in the way it combines male and female perfectly. Enough said.

New Art Therapy Challenge!!

I like to always challenge myself.

Each month I go to http://nikerunning.nike.com and create a challenge to run a fixed number or miles in a certain amount of weeks. Currently I am running 30 miles by 5-2-2012.

Over a year ago I bought a brand new box of "64 Crayola Crayons", and I gave myself a challenge to do a drawing every day for 64 consecutive days. See older blog posts. In retrospect, it was a lot of fun, but in reality, some days it was frustrating and annoying.  But just because something is frustrating and annoying does mean we should not accept the challenge.

When we tell people about our personal goals and challenges, we are more likely to follow through. This is me telling you.

So, here is my new challenge...

I have discovered a new iPad drawing app called "Paper", and I love it!  I will create and post one drawing per day until the end of my daughters' high school school year - June 12, 2012.  That is exactly 54 days from today.

 Follow me on this journey....

Here is my first drawing done on my iPad with the "Paper" app.
